This is what my poor Smokey had to endure the last few weeks of his life. The end result of a tumor that started as an inch or so bump under the skin. It grew to the size of a tennis ball that painfully pulled on the muscle of his leg and ulcerated to a dollar size draining necrotic (medical term for dying tissue) mess. The tumor first broke open to about the size of a quarter. Even though I was treating the wound with antibiotic ointment and pain medication, in the end Smokey started sleeping most of the time in the closet as a way to protect himself from further injury. He was still eating and sitting in the sun but I had to decide soon if I was controlling the pain enough and was this really quality of life. When he started hiding behind the sofa I knew it was time to take him to see the doctor for the last time.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I just recently had to take my cat, Aty, in for the last time. She stopped being social towards the other cats and started hiding a lot. She ate less than before. She gathered a number of lumps behind her neck and they started to bother her so bad that she couldn't stop scratching them. The vet couldn't figure out what it was, and we were running out of time.
Why didn't you take him to the vet from the beginning. Right when the tumor opened you were supposed to take him.
Smokey was under continuous veterinary care right from the start. This type of tumor requires aggressive surgery or leg amputation and possible follow-up with chemo and/or radiation. This was not an option for us.
Kathy,so very about Smokey. I have an 11 year old cat with a tumor or ? on the back of his neck. It started out small and years later has broken, healed over and now remains open.I have not been able to afford even a vetinary visit.I know it will be $$$. I feel so terrible for my cat(Bubba)to have an open skin area. He keeps it clean. Recently I have saved up enough for a vet appiontment. I saw the photo of Smokie an it looked so similar to Bubba's. I would appreciate it vey much if you would direct me to a website
for the name of and condition of Smokey. I am not trying to diagnos the condition, just educate myself. Also any pet or cat medical assistance programs. I am aware of a few. I really would appreciate it so much. Ilive in San Diego ,CA. Yhis is my first time commenting or participating in a blog! Thanks
